Core Competency Assessment

The below information is how I have met the core competencies at an Educator Pathway 3 level:
Demonstrates engagement with education theory
Develops learner-centered curricula:
- Recognizing a need for increasing education around pediatric IV starts, the CNEs collaborated to create a lesson plan
- Information was gathered from pediatric nurses within Fraser Health with a questionnaire
- A lesson plan was created and carried out: see link below:
- Post education evaluation noted an increase in confidence with pediatric IV starts in Fraser Health pediatric nurses
Designs and implements education based on identified needs and changing practices:
- Recognizing a need to streamline orientation and to build a sense of community and connection for the pediatric nurses in FHA, the pediatric CNEs collaborated to create a Regional Pediatric Orientation
- With approval from the MICY program managers and directors we were able to receive funding for a one day in person orientation that could occur 2-3x/year at rotating sites
- By utilizing adult learning theory the pediatric CNEs created a lesson plan for in-person regional pediatric orientation for new hires see link below:
Develops, reviews, and modifies instructional tools, resources, technology and media:
- Identifying some changes required on the FHA CAPE tool the pediatric CNEs and CNS contacted Professional Practice in consultation
- The pediatric CNEs were the first to collaborate with Professional Practice to replace the pediatric “CAPE” tool and create the “Self assessment competency tool and ways of learning” and the “Self assessment skills tool”
- By critically reflecting on the purpose of the tools the pediatric CNEs along with guiding consultants in Professional Practice created the following competency tools:
- Reflecting on the need for more documentation on the Pediatric Observation Units in FHA in collaboration with the CNE’s and unit nurses I developed the Outpatient Care Record – Pediatric
Fosters effective teaching and learning relationships
Acts as a preceptor/mentor to learners, colleagues, and other educators:
- I have had the opportunity to be a mentor to my colleagues throughout my career. I am accountable, responsible, and knowledgeable. I form good rapport with fellow nurses, physicians, students and allied health team members.
- I have been a preceptor to a couple nursing students in their final practicums. They have gone on to have successful careers in pediatric nursing.
- More recently I have experienced clinical instructing with UFV, I have received vey positive feedback from all of the students I have had the pleasure of instructing.
“Laura is a positive influence, a knowledgeable pediatric nurse, a mentor, and a friend” – Gloria, Pediatric CNE
“I can always count on Laura to complete any of my requests, she is an extremely hard worker, efficient with time management and competent in her nursing abilities”- Melissa, Pediatric CNS
“She is positive, encouraging, and easy to communicate with” – Jess, UFV Student Nurse
Demonstrates caring, confidence, patience, integrity and flexibility:
- I embrace these values and ways of being in my nursing career
- My colleagues, mentors, learners and other health care professionals agree I demonstrate caring, confidence, patience, integrity and flexibility in my nursing practice, education, and everyday life
- These values are integral to being a strong leader and CNE
Facilitates learning and creates effective learning environments
Develops respectful working relationships to promote positive learning environments:
- Established multiple working relationships with interdisciplinary team members, Ex: to have pediatric nurses able to practice IV starts on adult patients at 2 different FHA sites partnered with Surgical Day Care at ARH and Adult Day Care at CGH
- See above in first section for lesson plan for IV starts
Promotes and supports others in the value of caring for oneself:
- Very strong promoter of self care; walks daily on breaks at work, encourages colleagues to take nutrition breaks, provides a safe space for colleagues to talk/vent/decompress
- Took nursing students off the unit and outdoors on 12 hour shifts to promote self care, re-center, and promote physical activity
- I organize social events & recreation activities with my team at RMH
Manages multiple and/or complex factors related to learning
Collaborate with stakeholders to maximize learning experiences for individuals, groups and organizations:
- After identifying a need by assessing the knowledge of new hires, I collaborated with the CNEs, CNS’s, MICY managers and directors to establish the Regional Pediatric Orientation for new hires, this is still occurring multiple times/year since its inception in 2022/2023
- See above in first section for lesson plan for Regional Pediatric Orientation
Analyzes the impact of human resources and organizational context and culture on education:
- The lack of human resources and current healthcare setting impacts learning and the educational environment negatively
- One must be creative in the approach to nursing education
- By offering bite sized Edu-quicks or micro learning sessions, flexibility to teach on the fly, and keeping education relevant learning can still be achieved successfully in todays busy healthcare environment
- See further below for micro learning session example
Advances Professional Practice
Promotes reflective professional practice:
- In collaboration with Professional Practice consultants, the pediatric CNS and the other 2 pediatric CNEs we updated the Pediatric Competency tool and Pediatric Skills tool as seen above in section one.
- In collaboration with pediatric CNS and CNEs updated the Pediatric Course Checklist to ensure correct/applicable courses are completed in a timely manner, and updated links to courses and materials.
Develops a plan for ongoing professional growth to ensure one’s competency in multiple areas of practice:
- I am always looking for more opportunities to learn and grow professionally, ex: applying to EP 4 and the masters in nursing program
- This e-portfolio is an example of developing a plan for ongoing professional growth
Demonstrates leadership abilities
Participates in quality and safety initiatives:
- Using a large whiteboard in the nurses report room I updated the quality and safety initiatives on a weekly/biweekly basis
- The whiteboard provided an area to highlight educational topics, report on hand hygiene/IV pump audit results, celebrate wins of the unit, and post resources
- To prepare for Accreditation 2023 I utilized this board as one way to communicate with staff, about the required organizational practices for the MICY program
Advocates for learners and learning:
- Identifying the need for a Regional Pediatric Orientation shows that I advocate for learners and learning (see lesson plan above in the first section)
- After attending the Meditech Expanse in person training, I identified the need for more pediatric specific education, in collaboration with the unit Manager, CNE and PCCs we created micro learning sessions on topics relative to pediatric nursing:
- These “bite sized” learning sessions were delivered by myself and the CNE on the unit to nurses on shift over multiple days and weeks during the summer prior to Meditech Expanse roll out
- See the attached example of one of the micro sessions:
